What An Amazing Place to Guide the Education of Young Children!
August 20, 2011
Dear Families of Robert Mitchell Students,
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself, and share my honor and excitement with continuing as principal at Robert Mitchell Elementary School. This school has such a tremendous history of educating the youth of Sparks for over seventy years that it is with respect and admiration I continue this job for a second year. When I walk down the hallways it is easy to understand what this beautiful educational setting has meant to so many students over the years. I feel fortunate to be a part of the school culture that is focused on student learning, has a commitment to high expectations, innovation and collaboration. It is my intention to carry on these important traditions and practices.
Let me share some information about my educational background and professional experience. I graduated from high school in Marion, Illinois and earned both my bachelor and masters degrees at Southern Illinois University.I taught fourth through eighth grade students during the six years I was a teacher. My first administrative position was at a small, middle school in Illinois and I loved every minute of the seven years I spent there. In order to move closer in miles to my elderly parents I accepted a position as an elementary principal in Balsam Lake, Wisconsin. Living for nine years on a lake in the north woods was an experience I will always treasure. It is true that the winters are bitterly cold there and I love new challenges so I dreamed a dream of making a huge change in my life and was fortunate to be hired by the Washoe County School District. So I moved to Reno, Nevada with my husband and youngest son. Yes, the weather is markedly warmer here! When I first arrived I spent one year at Duncan Elementary and three years at Stead Elementary as an assistant principal. It is amazing to think that this will be my 22nd year as a school administrator as I embrace each new challenge with tremendous energy and enthusiasm.
I hope you will take part in your child’s education by inquiring about their time spent at school. Ask about their friends and teachers. Get involved as they complete their homework or seek your help on special projects. Encourage your child to read at least 20 minutes every night.I am confident that your child will demonstrate greater motivation as you continue to show interest in their academic and social experiences.
I look forward to meeting the students, families and members of the community in the coming months. With my “open door” policy, I think you will find me to be open, honest and compassionate. I look forward to earning your trust and respect.
